Who are we?

saso.creative is Sam Chapman and Nanette Backhouse. We've been creating happy clients since July 2000

NettieProfile

Nanette Backhouse

Art direction / graphic design / branding and logos / print design and layout / book design / creative solution explorer

Nettie comes power-packed with more than 30 years' experience in a variety of creative disciplines that belies her diminutive stature.

Whilemuch of her career has been honing her skills in branding and graphic design for clients big and small, local, national and international, she's also done time as an award-winning book designer (APA Book Designer of the Year, 2007), a costume designer (Farscape, Lost in Space), a couturier (Mr Pearl, Paul Treacy, and John Galliano), and art student (Bournemouth College of the Arts).

This varied experience is evident in the cross-discipline creativity she brings to her work.

SamProfile

Sam Chapman

Creative direction / strategy and planning / copywriting / marketing / web design / storyteller / grammar geek / edge-of-idea adventurer

After more than a decade in advertising, marketing and publishing, Sam broke out to start saso.creative in July 2000, and immediately snaffled some blue chip clients — Readers Digest, Compass Group, IMP among them — from much larger, snappier dressed agencies.

He has extensive experience in business development, strategy and copywriting across advertising, public relations and marketing. He's also written for Rolling Stone, Leonardo and Lonely Planet, and, as saso book design, has contracted and packaged for some of Australia's and New Zealand's largest publishers, including Random House, Hodder Headline, Hachete, Murdoch Books and HarperCollins.

And you? Who are you?

You've been sitting on this killer idea for a couple of years now, working at Red Rooster to save up some cash, putting together your marketing plan in the small hours, refining your pitch, getting the pieces in place. Now what?

We can help.

You're a small business, known and respected in the local community, recognised for doing what you do well and at a reasonable price. But you've got an eye for expansion, and that's going to take some local advertising, perhaps a letterbox drop, someone has mentioned something called 'MailChimp', and some kind of tracking mechanism so you know who is responding to what, and why.

We can help.

You're a bit of a technophobe (your daughter calls you a 'luddite') and you've been avoiding this whole website / Facebook / cloud shenanigans for the last few years. But your new office manager has shown you the stats, and you realise you can't ignore it any longer.

We can help.

You're a multinational that needs a regular campaign of both digital and printed communications, distributed to internal marketing teams as well as clients around the globe, and you want to outsource the copywriting, design, production, printing and distribution to a turnkey operation.

We can help.

Coast-Out-Logo

CoastOut

We believe in the importance of diversity of cultures, lifestyles, ideas and opinions in the community, and we see CoastOut as a vital link in achieving diversity and acceptance in Coffs Harbour and surrounds.

We were stoked to be involved with CoastOut as a sponsor and design partner, free of charge.

Coffs Coast Derby

And lest you think we're culture snobs, we like a bit or rough and tumble on the side, too. Roller Derby was, not so long ago, a sport solely for women; moreover, one of its constitution's aims was to encourage diversity of background, body shape, experience, and fitness. We think that's pretty cool.

We've come along for the ride.

Still

We believe in art. We believe its role as a mirror to society, culture and the status quo is an important one. We believe the arts in general, especially regional arts, need more support from the commerical world than is often the case.

We invest in the works of local artists when we can, and we support the galleries and exhibitions that support those artists.

We were thrilled to be involved with the bi-annual Still National Still Life award as sponsor and design partner.

Coffs City Choir: Logo. We're always happy to help a community not-for-profit out in whatever way we can — in this instance, a free logo and banner design.

Coffs City Choir

Choir president, Paula Strong, got in touch on the back on one of our Focus articles in which we extolled the virtues of using professional designers rather than clip art, stock libraries or services-auction sites.

"But," Paula asked, "what if you're a not-for-profit with very little funding but still need a professional look to attract sponsors?" Good question, Paula.

Without an especially good answer to hand, we offered to develop the choir's logo and brand without charge. Sometimes ya just gotta ask the right question, right?

Bunker Cartoon Gallery

We've been involved with the Bunker for some time now, as a design partner offering our expertise without charge, as a financial sponsor and as a Director of the Board.

It is effectively the nation's cartoon archive and we should all be thrilled that it's here in Coffs. We know we are.
